What dryer vents are actually like in Orlando

Orlando has less salt air than the coasts and more pollen, and the pollen matters. Oak and pine load the outside air heavily in spring, and an exterior vent hood that sits at ground level collects that debris on the outside of the flap while lint builds on the inside.

The newer communities, Lake Nona and much of Dr. Phillips, are two storey homes with second floor laundry rooms. College Park and Delaney Park are older single storey houses where the run is shorter but the duct is often original.

The four signs worth acting on

You do not need an inspection to know whether this applies to you. Any one of these means the run is restricted, and they get worse in the order listed.

• Two cycles to dry one load. The most common first symptom, and the one people live with longest. A dryer that cannot exhaust cannot remove moisture, so it just keeps running.
• The top of the dryer is hot to the touch. Heat that should be leaving the house is staying in the machine. This is the point at which the appliance starts wearing out early.
• The laundry room feels humid. A dryer moves several liters of water out of your clothes per load. If the room is damp, that water is not reaching the outside.
• A burning or hot-lint smell. Stop using the dryer. This is lint reaching a temperature it should never reach, and it is the last warning you get.

What the job involves

1. Airflow reading at the termination. We measure what is actually coming out before touching anything, so the improvement is a number and not an opinion.
2. Pull and inspect the transition. The flexible hose behind the machine is where a surprising share of blockages sit, crushed flat by a dryer pushed back to fit the space.
3. Rotating brush and compressed air through the full run. Worked from both ends where the configuration allows, so lint is carried out rather than pushed into a corner.
4. Clear the exterior hood and free the damper. Nests, paint, leaf debris and corroded flaps are cleared here. A clean duct with a blocked exit is still a blocked vent.
5. Second airflow reading. Same instrument, same place. If the number has not moved, the job is not finished.
